Inquisition of the Papacy

The elders who are among you I exhort ... Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight of it, not by constraint, but willingly; not for dishonest gain, but from a ready mind; Neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being examples to the flock.
I Peter 5.1-3

Not for that we have dominion over your faith, but are helpers of your joy: for by faith ye stand.
II Corinthians 1.24

The Inquisition was a tool of the papacy purportedly to stamp out heresy. However, in reality, it was more at variance with the Spirit of Christ than the 'heretics' who were victimized by it. It was a means of exercising political power, instilling terror in both kings and citizens. One of its primary purposes was the confiscation of the wealth of its victims. Its methods included torture, imprisonment, or execution of the obstinate, and a variety of lesser punishments for the penitent. There is nothing in the teachings of Christ or the apostles that can be used to justify the Inquisition. Christ told his followers that they would be as sheep in the midst of wolves. The 'inquisitors of heretical depravity' were more often rather as wolves in the midst of sheep. Some historical background and facts of the Inquisition are included in the links at left.
